As we age, one of the most noticeable changes we experience is in our hair. From hair loss to hair thinning and colour changes, these transformations are universal. As a Semi Permanent Makeup specialist, I observe these changes daily at my clinics in Kent.

Understanding Hair Changes with Age

Let's delve into why these changes occur.

Melanocytes are specialized cells located in the bottom layer of our skin. They produce melanin, the pigment responsible for the colour of our skin, hair, and even our eyes.

As we age, the number of melanocytes decreases, and their functionality diminishes. This reduction leads to less melanin production, causing our hair to turn fair or grey.

Additionally, our hair follicles can shrink, a process known as miniaturization. This results in finer hair strands and reduced overall hair density. Consequently, we may notice a loss of texture and thickness in our hair, which can also feel dry and brittle. These changes can affect not just our scalp hair but also our body hair, eyebrows, and eyelashes.

Eyebrows may become patchy in certain areas or turn fair or grey, leading to a loss of their full shape and colour. Some individuals may even lose most of their eyebrow hairs and eyelashes.

Hair loss can stem from various factors, including genetics, hormonal changes, medical conditions, stress, and nutritional deficiencies. I always discuss these aspects with my clients, as medical guidance may be necessary alongside support.
