Everything you need to know before booking a treatment...

Updated: Jul 22

If you live in Kent and you're considering semi permanent makeup, its natural to have concerns or worries and most clients come along with lots of questions and full of nerves, so understanding the process before you book will help you feel more confident and prepared.

Whether you are looking for fuller brows, an eye enhancing eyeliner, beautiful lip liner or have a scar that needs rejuvenating or blending in with your skin colour with our skin coloured ink pigments, then our guide below will simplify everything you need to know before booking.

What is semi permanent makeup?

Semi permanent makeup is a cosmetic, mild tattoo process that implants tiny pixels of ink into the upper dermal layer of skin using both a range of tiny needles with a digital machine or a microblade tool.

These ink pixels can be implanted on the eyebrows, eyeliner, lips and skin and use a selection of very natural inks for eyebrows, darker inks for our eyeliner treatments, pretty soft pink and reds for our lip treatments and natural skin tones for our scar camouflage treatments.

When the treatment area heals, the ink particles remain in the upper dermal layer of skin for 1 to 2 years, which will naturally fade over time. This is varied depending on skin type, lifestyle, diet and sun exposure and annual top ups are always recommended to restore the shape and colour beautifully.

Choosing the right treatment?

Not every treatment is suitable for every client and we will always discuss which treatment we think is best for you.

Hair Stroke Eyebrows - This treatment is perfect for those with no hair or patchy eyebrows and we can create very minimal, soft hair strokes or thicker and more bolder hair strokes. This is created with a microblade tool.

Powder Eyebrows - A digital machine is used to implant tiny ink pigments into the skin like shading. Perfect for those with hair on the brow line that is either fair or grey and requires more shape and definition, or for those who pencil in their eyebrows for a more bolder, fuller look everyday. This is also a great addition to hair strokes for a more defined shape or for those with oily skin.

Block Eyebrows - This treatment is only ideal for those who require a more solid, bolder look where lots of ink pigments are implanted along the hair line. Suitable for those who like to wear heavier makeup on a daily basis.

Thin Eyeliner or Lash Enhancement - Tiny ink pigments are inserted directly along the lash line using a machine and very tiny needle (size is carefully selected) which help enhance the eyelashes. Perfect for those with fair eyelashes, no eyelashes or want a more open, enhanced, natural look everyday without having a lash lift and tint regularly. This can be done on the top or the bottom lash line.

Medium Eyeliner - Tiny pigments of ink are inserted along the upper eyelash line as above, however we add more ink to the area to build up layers of ink for a more enhanced and glamorous, darker look which saves plenty of time if you wear makeup and mascara daily.

Lip Liner - This treatment is perfect for those who have thin lips, have lost colour around the lip line due to age of sun exposure, cleft lip or want more shape and definition every day. We firstly draw a outline to create the perfect shape and then tiny ink pigments are inserted around the new shape.

Lip Blush or Colour - Perfect for those who wear lipstick daily or have lost their lip shape and colour due to age or sun exposure. Blush is created with a very soft outline of tiny ink pigments and then dotted across the lips which heals very light. Lip colour is carried out using the same method as lip blush, however multiple treatments are usually required if more colour and definition is required.

Scar Rejuvenation - Carefully selected needles are used with a digital machine to work on the scar area, causing mild trauma, inflammation and redness which then forces the scar area to re-heal itself, rebuilding collagen, skin layers and skin colour (melanin).

Scar Camouflage - Carefully selected inks and needles are used to add pixels of colour to the scar area to blend in with the surrounding skin colour but most importantly absorb light, which scar areas normally reflect due to disorganised collagen.

Can I choose my own shape and colour?

Having carried out thousands of treatments, PMU BY Jo has a good eye for what suits every single client and a good understanding of what having semi permanent makeup means to daily routines and lifestyle. We will always work with you to find a shape and colour that you are 100% happy with before the treatment takes place.

At PMU By Jo, we have the very best tools, inks and products and know what it best for each client too :)

Will it hurt?

There will be a small level of discomfort and having had all treatments done myself I personally describe them to be a little scratchy and sore, but completely bearable.

Most clients are pleasantly surprised and some even fall asleep! Pain can vary for person to person but the treatment itself is much quicker than most clients ever expected and they wished they had not been so nervous.

You will also be numbed before the procedure to minimise the pain and help you feel more at ease.

Am I suitable for a treatment?

Not every client is suitable for semi permanent makeup, as we are all living organisms and can all react differently to anything and heal differently.

As the safety and wellbeing of our clients is our No1 priority, we will always provide you with a pre-treatment information sheet to ensure that you meet the medical criteria and are prepared for the treatment. We are not able to treat:

  • Clients under 18

  • Clients who are pregnant or breast feeding

  • Clients with a heart condition or pacemaker

  • Clients with epilepsy or uncontrolled diabetes

  • Clients undergoing any chemotherapy or radiotherapy

  • Clients currently taking any blood thinning medication or Antabuse

  • Scars that are less than 12 months old and still pink

  • Clients with a known transmittable disease such as HIV, Aids or Shingles

  • Clients who have a nickel allergy or get keloid scarring

  • Have recently had surgery or surgery is planned very soon

Please see our full medical criteria here or get in touch if you have any questions or concerns.

What is the healing process like?

Prior to your treatment, the area will appear pink or red and may feel a little swollen. This will go down by the next day or two and as the treatment area heals, it may feel tight or dry and you wil notice some scabbing.

We will provide you with an easy to follow 'stages of healing' guide to ensure that you take good care of your new treatment area with ease.

By following the simply steps or keeping the area clean, using your aftercare cream, avoiding any makeup, creams or skin treatments on the area itself and not rubbing or picking the area then the treatment will heal as it should.

PMU By Jo is always on hand and happy to answer any questions or concerns during the following stages of healing!
